Novak Djokovic has offered his heartfelt support and thoughtful advice to China’s top-ranked female player, Qinwen Zheng, as she continues her recovery from a recurring elbow injury. Djokovic’s comments come after Zheng was forced to retire early from her second-round match at the China Open, marking a frustrating halt to her much-anticipated return to the WTA Tour.
Zheng’s comeback cut short
The 23-year-old world number 10 had returned to action at the China Open following surgery on her right elbow, eager to reclaim her momentum after missing several months on tour. She began her campaign with a hard-fought victory in the opening round but was unable to complete her next match against eventual finalist Linda Noskova. Citing a return of pain in her elbow, Qinwen Zheng admitted after the match that she might have “rushed back” too soon.
Her injury setback comes after a breakthrough season that saw her reach the final of the Australian Open and win gold for China, solidifying her position as one of the sport’s rising stars.
Novak Djokovic sends encouragement and perspective
Speaking to Youku, 24-time Grand Slam champion Djokovic extended his empathy toward Zheng and shared valuable insight from his own career dealing with injuries.
“Well, injuries are the biggest enemy of the athlete, of any athlete from any sport, so I definitely wish her a fast recovery,” Novak Djokovic said.
He continued by acknowledging Qinwen Zheng’s talent and potential, expressing optimism about her future. “I think she’s got a very good game, great attitude, a good team of people around her. She’s still young, you know, so it’s important to really look at the big picture for her — not only thinking about, okay, I want to come back and play as soon as possible.”
Djokovic, who has battled and overcome numerous physical challenges throughout his career, emphasized the importance of long-term health and sustainability. “Really see how she can create a foundation for her health, for her body, for her mind for the next 10, 15 years, because she has the opportunity to play for a long time and to be very successful and hopefully win Grand Slams,” he advised.
Mutual respect and support
The Serbian icon also revealed his warm rapport with the young Chinese star. “She’s a very nice girl and we get along well,” he said. Novak Djokovic concluded his message with a generous offer, adding, “I wish her that, and she knows that she can always reach out to me if she needs any advice or if she has questions; I’m happy to share my experience.”
As Zheng focuses on recovery, Djokovic’s words serve as both encouragement and guidance — a reminder that patience and perspective are just as important as determination on the road back to full fitness.
