Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal secured his spot in the main draw of the Australian Open 2024, achieving a notable milestone in his career. On Friday, January 12, the 26-year-old triumphed over Slovakia's Alex Molcan with a straight-set victory of 6-4, 6-4 in the final round of the qualifiers, played on Court 3.

This achievement marks a significant comeback for Nagal, as he makes a return to the Grand Slam main draw stages after a three-year hiatus. His last appearance in a Grand Slam main draw was at the Australian Open in 2021, where he faced an opening-round defeat against Lithuania’s Ricardas Berankis with scores of 2-6, 5-7, 3-6.

Nagal, currently ranked 139th in the world singles rankings, has been making strides in the tennis world, most notably with his recent advancement to the main draw of the Australian Open 2024 men’s singles. This achievement followed a series of impressive performances in the qualifying rounds, highlighting his skill and determination.

In the penultimate qualifying round, Nagal demonstrated his prowess by defeating local wildcard Edward Winter with a decisive 6-3, 6-2 victory. The match, which unfolded over 64 minutes at the KIA Arena, was a clear display of Nagal's relentless pursuit of excellence in tennis.

Nagal commenced his journey in the qualifiers with a commendable win over France's Geoffrey Blancaneaux on January 10. In a match that lasted one hour and 46 minutes, he emerged victorious with a scoreline of 6-3, 7-5 on Court 8, setting the tone for his qualifying campaign.

Nagal's foray into the upper echelons of tennis has been marked by notable appearances in Grand Slam events. He has previously played in the main rounds of the US Open in 2019 and 2020 and the Australian Open in 2021. In his 2019 US Open debut, Nagal garnered widespread attention for his exceptional performance against tennis legend Roger Federer. In this match, he notably won a set against Federer, becoming the first Indian player to achieve this feat.

Despite his past successes, Nagal faced a challenging road to the Australian Open 2024, as he did not receive a wildcard entry from the All India Tennis Association (AITA). This meant that he had to navigate through the qualifiers, a task he accomplished with skill and determination, securing his place in the main draw of this prestigious Grand Slam event.
