Jannik Sinner extends his dominance over Alexander Zverev with another straight-sets victory, strengthening his lead in their head-to-head rivalry.

Martina Navratilova highlights tactical reasons behind Zverev’s repeated struggles against the Italian star.

The rivalry between Alexander Zverev and Jannik Sinner has taken another decisive turn after the Italian secured a convincing straight-sets victory. Sinner defeated Zverev 6-2, 6-4, extending his dominance in their recent encounters and further widening the gap in their head-to-head record.

With the latest win, Sinner now leads the rivalry 7-4 and has claimed victory in their last six consecutive meetings, highlighting the growing challenge Zverev faces when competing against the Italian star.

Jannik Sinner continues to dominate the matchup

Despite appearing to struggle with a back issue during the match, Sinner maintained control throughout the contest. His aggressive returning and relentless baseline pressure left Zverev searching for answers.

Zverev has attempted to shift his playing style this season by adopting a more aggressive approach, aiming to close the gap on top rivals such as Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. However, the strategy failed to deliver the desired results in their latest meeting.

Former world No. 4 Tim Henman suggested that Alexander Zverev’s performance allowed Jannik Sinner to dictate the match.

“I felt that Zverev kind of handed Sinner the breaks, it wasn’t as if Sinner played brilliant tennis to kind of win those points and in the second set he had opportunities in the early part and you felt that if Zverev could have got one of those then turn the tables,” Henman said after the match on Sky Sports.

“But, it was a little bit of a sense of deja vu on the side of the court, sort of almost waiting for Sinner to take those opportunities and yeah, 6-4, 6-2 straight sets, thank you very much, very comfortable.”

Martina Navratilova explains Zverev’s struggles

Tennis icon Martina Navratilova also weighed in on the matchup, praising Sinner’s tactical execution and ability to apply constant pressure.

“He just backs his shots so well, and he attacks the return of serve so well,” Navratilova said about Sinner. “He clobbered Zverev’s serve on the second serve points. Alexander Zverev served well, but not well enough and Jannik just doesn’t let you breathe, he just keeps pushing you and pushing you.”

Navratilova also pointed out how Jannik Sinner’s improved net play—guided by coach Darren Cahill—has elevated his game.

“He’s done so well moving to the net, and his technique is just perfect, Darren Cahill has really improved his volley, and transitioning to the net.

“Zverev’s just too far behind the baseline, he didn’t have enough to bother Sinner…I think Zverev doesn’t have enough variety, he doesn’t have enough of a backhand slice to bring Sinner inside the court, so he’s only running side-to-side, he doesn’t have the soft hands to pull him off the court and Sinner can do that all day long and eventually gets on top of a point and eventually it’s all over.”

Rivalry becoming increasingly one-sided

As Jannik Sinner continues to refine his all-court game, the rivalry is becoming increasingly difficult for Alexander Zverev to manage. Unless the German introduces more tactical variety, the Italian’s relentless style could keep tipping the balance in future meetings.
