British tennis star Emma Raducanu has been forced to pull out of Wimbledon on the eve of the tournament after a scan revealed a stress fracture in her lower right leg. The 23-year-old, one of the home favourites, was due to face Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic in the first round on Monday. Raducanu had been managing a niggle in recent days but confirmed the injury had worsened following a final medical assessment.

In a statement, she said:
“I’ve done everything possible to try to get to the start line but after a final scan tonight the niggle I’ve been managing has developed into a stress fracture. I’ve been medically advised to stop pushing through.”
Raducanu further added:
“Playing at Wimbledon, in front of a home crowd, means everything to me, so this is really difficult to process.”
The withdrawal marks another injury setback for the 2021 US Open champion, whose career has been repeatedly interrupted by physical issues since her remarkable breakthrough victory at Flushing Meadows. She had shown promising signs this grass-court season, reaching the final at Queen’s Club after overcoming a viral illness that limited her early-year matches.
Wimbledon organisers will now reallocate her place in the draw. Fans and experts expressed disappointment at the timing, with many wishing the popular Briton a swift recovery. No specific return date has been given, but stress fractures typically require several weeks of rest.
