Chelsea Green faces intense backlash and death threats after Hulk Hogan tribute.

WWE star clarifies her stance on racism and steps back from social media for mental well-being.

Former WWE Women’s Tag Team Champion and wrestling star Chelsea Green has taken a step back from social media following an unexpected wave of backlash triggered by her on-air comments about late WWE legend Hulk Hogan. While attempting to pay respects to the wrestling icon during a live broadcast, Green found herself at the center of intense online outrage—culminating in hate messages, name-calling, and even death threats.

A tribute that sparked controversy

Hogan, whose real name was Terry Bollea, passed away on July 24 at the age of 71 following a cardiac arrest at his Florida residence. As tributes poured in from across the wrestling world, Green was asked to comment on his legacy during an appearance on CBS News' 24/7 platform.

Describing Hogan as an "absolute icon", Chelsea Green also acknowledged his "polarising political views." The comment, although seemingly balanced, drew severe criticism—particularly due to Hulk Hogan’s controversial past, including allegations of racism and his vocal support for Donald Trump during the 2024 U.S. Presidential Election.

Chelsea Green responds: “My stance on racism is unwavering”

The reaction from fans online was swift and unforgiving. Amid rising hostility, Green took to her X handle (formerly Twitter) to clarify her position.

“I’ve tried to keep my page positive and comedic, but today, a lot changed… and it hit harder than I expected. The name calling, the death threats, the faceless accounts. Social media was supposed to be a fun place and it hasn’t been for a while. It’s been overwhelming and I need to step away for a little bit. Love my PatriHOTS! xo president chels,” she wrote.

“Yesterday, I was asked to comment on Hulk Hogan on live TV. Let me be clear: my stance on racism is unwavering. I do not condone it—period.”

Chelsea Green explained that her comments were not meant to ignore the complexities of Hulk Hogan’s legacy but were an attempt to respectfully acknowledge his passing.

“If my response (or tweet) seemed dismissive of real concerns, I sincerely apologize. That was never my intention. I tried to acknowledge a death respectfully, even when the legacy is complicated. I am learning one day at a time and will continue to learn.”

“It hit harder than I expected”

Despite her clarifying statement, the vitriol online only intensified. The breaking point came when Green revealed she had been subjected to death threats and relentless abuse.

“I’ve tried to keep my page positive and comedic, but today, a lot changed… and it hit harder than I expected. The name-calling, the death threats, the faceless accounts,” she shared.

Choosing to prioritize her mental well-being, Green has since deactivated or limited her activity on social platforms, stepping back from the digital spotlight.

A reminder of the weight of words in public spaces

The controversy surrounding Chelsea Green is a sharp reminder of the challenges public figures face when navigating sensitive topics—especially in the era of instant social media scrutiny. While Green’s intent may have been respectful, her experience highlights the volatility of public reactions and the need for measured, empathetic discourse.
