As Caitlin Clark prepares to start her sophomore WNBA season with the Indiana Fever, a new face is stepping into the spotlight. Former UConn standout Paige Bueckers is set to begin her professional journey after being selected No. 1 overall by the Dallas Wings in this year’s WNBA Draft.
Naturally, comparisons between the two college sensations have followed Bueckers into the league. The discourse began during their NCAA days and has only intensified as Bueckers begins her pro career.
“I Don’t Think We Play Alike”: Bueckers Gets Candid
In a recent exclusive interview with ClutchPoints’ Joey Mistretta, Bueckers addressed the ongoing comparisons to Clark. Her response was honest, introspective, and refreshingly self-assured.
“Yeah, I think, running my own race, not running a race in comparison,” Bueckers said. “Because in all honesty, I don't think me and Caitlin play at all alike."
She acknowledged the inevitable comparisons due to their shared class and position but emphasized their stylistic differences.
"But I understand growing up in the same class, the same generation, both guards… I don't know, but I don't think we play alike."
Comfortable in Her Own Skin
Despite the constant chatter, Bueckers isn't letting it distract her. The 23-year-old remains focused on her own growth and embracing the moment.
"It's just not worrying about that and like I said, running my own race and staying present every single day,” she added. “Those comparisons are just media driven, narrative driven. And they're good for the game in terms of getting people to talk about it and it being a talking point. So I'm sure we both have gotten used to it."
Her outlook shows maturity beyond her years, a sign that she’s mentally ready to handle the spotlight that comes with being a top pick.
Growth Through Experience
Bueckers also revealed that early in her career, the external noise did get to her.
"I used to think about it and internalize it a little bit more, but now working on myself, working on being present and embracing the people around me and just working on getting better every single day has kind of helped me."
For Bueckers, the focus now is on blocking out pressure and expectations and simply becoming the best version of herself.
"Just like any comparison to anything, any expectations, any pressures, any external things that people think I have to live up to."
