In a stunning move that sent shockwaves through the NBA, four-time champion LeBron James is joining the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The 41-year-old superstar, who will be playing in his record-extending 24th NBA season, announced the decision himself on social media Friday, describing it as his “last decision.” James revealed he seriously considered retirement after the Lakers’ season but ultimately chose to chase a fifth championship.

On his social media account, he wrote:
“I thought I was done when the season ended... This is my last decision. I’m not going for money. I’m not going for family.”
James added:
“I still want to sacrifice. I still want to work. I still want to grind... I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time.”
The 76ers were able to beat NBA franchises like the Cleveland Cavaliers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves and Miami Heat to acquire the Los Angeles Lakers legend and get his services.
James spent the past eight seasons with the Lakers, winning a title in the 2020 bubble and playing alongside his son Bronny last season. He informed the Lakers in late June that he would not return.
In Philadelphia, James joins a star-studded roster featuring former MVP Joel Embiid, All-Star guard Tyrese Maxey, newly acquired All-NBA forward Jaylen Brown, and promising young talent VJ Edgecombe. The 76ers, who have not won a title since 1983, instantly become one of the Eastern Conference’s top contenders.
The veteran minimum deal allows Philly to add James while staying flexible under the salary cap. James had also been linked to his former teams, the Cavaliers and Heat, as well as other suitors like the Warriors. However, the NBA legend went on to go to the Sixers.
