England's dashing batter and former captain Joe Root is in excellent form. Root scored the 33rd century of his Test cricket career against Sri Lanka at Lord's Cricket Ground. With this, Root made many records in his name. After playing an innings of 143 runs against Sri Lanka, Root remembered his mentor. While dedicating the 33rd century of his career to him, Root spoke from his heart.
Whom did Joe Root remember?
Root, who scored 143 runs in 206 balls with 18 fours against Sri Lanka, said after the end of the first day that Graham Thorpe offered him so much.
"I've been very lucky to work with a lot of people, whether it be senior players, coaches, mentors, and Thorpe was one of those people that offered me so much," Root was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.
"It was nice to be able to think of him in that moment. He's someone that I'm going to sorely miss. He put a lot into my game, into my career, and without his help I definitely wouldn't be where I am now,” he added.
Root gave the credit of success to Graham Thorpe
Root scored the sixth century of his Test cricket career for England at Lord's ground. With this, Root has become the third batter of England to score the most centuries at Lord's ground, which is called the Mecca of cricket. Before Root, England's Graham Gooch and Michael Vaughan have also scored six Test centuries each at this ground.
Root became the first batter to do this
Graham Thorpe, one of England's best batters, committed suicide this month. He was a victim of depression and after quitting cricket, he spent most of his time in England. It was because of him that Root made his debut in Test cricket for England at the age of 21. Since then, Root has not looked back and now he has the highest number of 33 Test centuries among active Test cricketers. Before Root in this list were the names of Steve Smith (32 centuries) and Kane Williamson (32 Test centuries). Whereas Virat Kohli has only 29 centuries in Tests so far.
