Team India has received a major boost just ahead of the Asia Cup 2025 as their T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has passed a fitness test at the Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru, as per a report in Indian Express. This clears him for selection for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 as reportedly BCCI is slated to pick the India's squad on August 19. Suryakumar had been recovering from a lower-right abdomen hernia surgery he underwent in Munich, Germany, this past June.

Going by the report, Suryakumar is "fit and will be available to captain the Indian team during the Asia Cup." The source privy to the development further stated that he recently completed his rehabilitation program at the COE and will be attending the team selection meeting. The Asia Cup is scheduled to take place in Dubai from September 9 to 28, with India set to face Pakistan on September 14. The senior selection committee will convene in Mumbai on Tuesday to finalize the squad.
“He has cleared his fitness and will be available to captain the Indian team during the Asia Cup. He was at the COE till a few days ago, where he underwent a rehab programme and has now been declared fit. He will be attending the Indian team selection meeting,” a source said, as quoted by Indian Express.
In June, the explosive India batter provided a health update on Instagram, confirming that he had undergone successful surgery for a sports hernia in his lower-right abdomen. "Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I'm already on the road to recovery. Can't wait to be back," he wrote. Following his appearances in both the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Mumbai T20 League, Yadav traveled to the United Kingdom to consult with a specialist about his condition. This was not his first surgery; he had previously undergone a similar procedure for a sports hernia last year and an ankle surgery in 2023.
Suryakumar had an excellent season with the bat for the Mumbai Indians. He scored 717 runs, making him only the second batsman after the legendary Sachin Tendulkar to cross the 600-run mark for the franchise in a single season. Yadav finished as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament, just behind Sai Sudharsan of the Gujarat Titans, who had 759 runs.
Earlier, Sports Tak reported that Hardik Pandya has also cleared the fitness test ahead of the showpiece tournament which is scheduled to start from September 9. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson's names have also been almost finalised for the India's squad.
India, who are placed in Group A, will start their Asia Cup 2025 campaign with a clash against UAE on September 10 followed by a key clash against arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14. India will then take on Oman on September 19 in their last group-stage match.
