Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has come up with a strong clarification on Dewald Brevis' replacement signing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. CSK had to issue a statement after their veteran spinner Ravichandran Ashwin's claim of paying extra money to the South Africa star. Ashwin had recently suggested that the franchise was 'ready to pay' above the stipulated amount to secure the services of Dewald Brevis.
CSK break silence on Dewald Brevis signing after R Ashwin's 'extra money' claim
Ashwin had claimed that several teams had approached the 22-year-old Brevis during the IPL 2025 season and the South African batter was engaged in salary negotiations with CSK, and the franchise ultimately paid an extra amount to secure his services. According to Ashwin, Brevis initially sought a higher sum than what the franchise offered, but CSK eventually agreed to meet his demands. Brevis had initially gone unsold during the mega auction, but was later brought on by CSK as an injury replacement for Gurjapneet Singh. The 22-year-old, who had a base price of Rs 75 lakh, ultimately received Rs 2.20 crore from the franchise.
“I will tell you something. About Brevis. He had a great time last IPL with CSK. In fact, a few teams were talking to him. A few teams left him because of the price. When he was supposed to be signed as a replacement, he was supposed to be signed at the base price. But what happens is you talk to the agents and the player will say, if you give me X amount extra, I will come,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
“That happens because the player knows if he is released next season, he will go for good money. So his concept was that, you pay me good money now else I will go for more next year. And CSK were ready to pay him, hence he came. In the back half, the CSK combination was strong. They will go with Rs 30 crore in IPL 2026 mini auction,” he further added.
Going by the existing IPL regulations, the salary for a replacement player cannot exceed the amount of the player they are replacing on the team's roster.
“Chennai Super Kings categorically clarifies that all actions taken by the franchise during the signing process of Dewald Brevis as a Replacement Player during TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 were in complete compliance with the rules and regulations of IPL. Dewald Brevis was signed in full accordance with the IPL Player Regulations 2025-27, specifically clause 6.6 under ‘Replacement Players,” CSK's statement read.
After going unsold in the IPL 2024 Mega Auctions, Dewald Brevis was a surprise signing for CSK. The franchise officially brought him on board on April 18, 2025, which was exactly at the halfway point of their season.
