The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) are looking to add a member to the Gautam Gambhir-led coaching staff reportedly a batting coach after Indian batters failed to perform in five Test match series against Australia. India's poor batting performance cost them to lose the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 1-3 after a decade. The official announcement is yet to come from the Cricket Board, but discussions within BCCI and the team management indicate a requirement to strengthen the support staff.
According to a report in Cricbuzz, some names, including former domestic cricket heavyweights, are being considered to become India's batting coach. No final decision has been made as of yet though.
The current India coaching staff consists of bowling coach Morne Morkel, assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, and fielding coach T Dilip including head coach Gautam Gambhir.
India's top batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma failed to perform against Australia. Kohli who holds a massive record against Australia smashed an unbeaten ton in the first Test match but failed to get the momentum further. He ended the series scoring 190 runs. On the other hand, Rohit who joined the team from the second Test match sacrificed his batting stop and played three Test matches where he scored just 31 runs. After struggling to score runs, Rohit opted out from the fifth Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy played in Sydney.
After losing the five-test match series against Australia, Team India are out from the World Test Championship (WTC) final which will take place in England.
Team India are currently preparing for the Champions Trophy 2025 which is scheduled to start from February 19 and India will take Bangladesh for their first match on February 20. Before the Champions Trophy, Rohit Sharma-led India are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against England.
