Mohammed Shami's family has hit back at Maulana for calling the star pacer 'criminal' for skipping roza

Shami was spotted sipping an energy drink during India vs Australia Champions Trophy clash

Team India's superstar pacer Mohammed Shami has found himself at the center of controversy during the 2025 Champions Trophy. Apparently Maulana Shahabuddin Razvi, national president of the All India Muslim Jamaat, publicly criticised Shami for consuming an energy drink during the Champions Trophy semifinal match against Australia. This criticism stems from the fact that the holy month of Ramadan is currently being observed.

Ramadan, a period of spiritual reflection and fasting for Muslims, requires adherents to abstain from food and drink from dawn until dusk. This year, according to the Islamic Hijri calendar, Ramadan commenced on the evening of February 28. Therefore, Shami's consumption of an energy drink during the match has been perceived by some as a violation of the fasting obligations associated with this sacred month.

The Maulana absurdly went on to label Shami 'criminal' for not observing roza during the Ramadan and said one of the compulsory duties of Islam is 'Roza'

"One of the compulsory duties of Islam is 'Roza' (fasting). If any healthy man or woman doesn't observe 'Roza', then they will have committed a great sin. A famous cricket personality of India, Mohammed Shami had water or some other beverage during a match. People were watching him. If he is playing, it means he is healthy. In such a condition, he did not observe 'roza' and even had water. The entire world saw him doing this," Razvi told ANI.

"This sends a wrong message among people. By not observing 'Roza', he has committed a crime. He should not do this. In the eyes of Shariat, he is a criminal. He will have to answer God," he added.

Mohammed Shami's family comes to his defense after Maulana's absurd remark following Roza controversy

Meanwhile, Shami's family, including his cousin brother and childhood coach have come to superstar pacer's defense after Maulana's absurd comments. In an exclusive conversation with Sports Tak, Shami's cousin brother Mohammed Zaid lambasted the Maulana and said that the Muslim cleric is trying to gain TRP out of this.

'Shami is playing in Dubai. During Ramadan, you have to stay hungry for a long time. It's a long journey where you can't eat anything, in that case fasting can be skipped. So, this is a big issue. But the Maulana wants to gain TRP by what he said. We are people who are ready to sacrifice for the nation," Zaid told Sports Tak.

Meanwhile, Shami’s childhood coach, Badruddin Siddiqui also hit back at the Maulana.

"Whatever the Maulana is saying is not for the country. In our religion, if you are sick, you cannot keep a fast. You can keep it later. He is playing for the country. In such cases, the country comes first, and everything else comes later," Badrudding said.

"The Maulana is not supporting the country. Your country is playing the final, and you are making such a statement. By doing this, you are demoralizing Shami. You cannot make such foolish statements. You have no right to do so. He is playing international cricket, not a club match. Shami has done nothing wrong. We, along with the entire country, stand with him. A few Maulanas do not matter. We are with you. Fight your battle and move forward. Nothing is more important than the country. Keep your fast, pray. All of this is for you. But when it comes to the country, you must do it for the country first. God is watching everything," he added.

Mohammed Shami's heroics in Champions Trophy 2025

Shami has been exceptional with the ball in the ongoing Champions Trophy. His performance against Australia in the Champions Trophy semi-final was instrumental in securing India's win. He delivered a decisive spell, picking three crucial wickets in Cooper Connolly, Steve Smith and Nathan Ellis which stopped Australia from posting a big total. He also took a fiery fifer in India's campaign opener against Bangladesh. In Jasprit Bumrah absence, Shami has stepped up and effectively spearheaded India's pace attack. His leadership has been exemplary, as evidenced by his impressive tally of eight wickets in the tournament so far. This achievement places him second on the list of highest wicket-takers in the 2025 Champions Trophy. Given his current form, Shami's role will be absolutely critical when India faces New Zealand in the highly anticipated Champions Trophy final on March 9.
