Achinta Sheuli wins India's third gold medal at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games (CWG) 2022 with a record-breaking display in the men's 73 kg category.

Sheuli created a games record in snatch with 143 kg lift. His only failed attempt was the second attempt in clean and jerk. After lifting 170 kg in the third attempt, he finished with a total of 313kg, which is also a CWG record.

Muhammad Erry Hidayat won the silver medal with a total of 303 kg (138 kg snatch and 165 kg clean and jerk). Hidayat tried to go for gold as he had two attempts to go past Achinta but failed. Canada's Shad Darsigny won the bronze medal with a total of 298 kg (135 kg snatch and 163 kg clean and jerk).

The West Bengal-born weightlifter took up the sport in 2011. Achinta idolised his brother who left the sport to support him after their father's death in 2013. In 2015, he joined Army Sports Institute and was boarded in the Indian National Camp.

This was India's sixth medal at CWG 2022. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu and Jeremy Lalrinnunga won the gold medal as well. All the six medals at CWG 2022 for India have come in weightlifting.

In the weightlifting category, India are currently leading with Malaysia in second place.
