5 oldest Indian players to make their ODI debut: Varun Chakravarthy holds this spot on list

India's in-form spinner Varun Chakravarthy made his ODI debut on February in the second ODI of the series. Chakravarthy entered record books as he entered the list of oldest cricketers to make their ODI debut for India. Here are the list of 5 oldest players -

5. Pacer Syed Abid Ali was 32 years and 307 days old when he made his ODI debut against England on July 13, 1974. He scored 17 runs but remained wicketless on his ODI debut as England won the match by four wickets. He went on to play just five ODIs.

4. Left-arm spinner Dilip Doshi made his ODI debut when he was 32 years and 350 days old. At the MCG in 1980, he took three wickets for 32 runs against Australia. He helped India bowl out the opposition for 142. India won the game by 66 runs.

3. Former India Test captain Ajit Wadekar made his ODI debut in 1974 when he was 33 years and 103 days old. It was also India's maiden ODI match. Wadekar scored 67 runs from 82 balls but India lost by four wickets. In the same match, Abid Ali made his ODI debut.

2. India's mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy made his ODI debut on the back of his performances in T20I cricket. He took 14 wickets in the five-T20I series. Among bowlers with 50 or more List A wickets, his bowling average of 14.13 is the best.

1. Farokh Engineer made his ODI debut in India's maiden ODI as well. Engineer scored 32 runs from 51 balls. He went on to play five ODIs. The Mumbai-born batter scored 114 runs from four innings including an unbeaten half-century.

Chakravarthy has played 23 List A games so far and taken 59 wickets including four five-wicket hauls. His economy rate is 4.28 runs per over. He was in stupendous form in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25 sa well.
