The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the national squad for the upcoming big-ticket ICC T20 World Cup on September 12 (Monday). While there weren't any surprises in the Indian squad, the veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik was dully rewarded for his stunning performances with the bat in T20s in 2022.
Karthik, who was part of the title-winning Indian squad in 2007, was named in India's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in Australia. And after getting selected, the Tamil Nadu batter posted a heartfelt tweet to celebrate his inclusion in the squad.
"Dreams do come true," wrote Karthik on Twitter, along with a blue heart emoji.
The right-handed batter was part of the Indian team in the recently-concluded Asia Cup but didn't get enough game time as Rishabh Pant was preferred as the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter option.
Having said that, Karthik earned his place in the World Cup through his mercurial performance with the bat in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season where he emerged as the best finisher of the tournament. The swashbuckling batter finished the 15th edition of the cash-rich league with 330 runs in 16 matches at a stunning strike rate of 183.33.
In an interview with Virat Kohli during IPL 2022, which was posted on iplt20.com, Karthik had made his intentions very clear.
"The bigger vision is that I want to play for the country. I know there is a World Cup around the corner. I want to be part of that World Cup desperately and help India cross that line. It's been a long time since India won a multi-nation tournament. I want to be that person who is helping India do that. For that, you need to be aware of so many things, try and be that player who people think 'hey this guy is doing something special," Karthik had said.
