New Zealand leg-spinner Ish Sodhi became the most successful bowler in T20I cricket against Indian skipper Virat Kohli. On his 29th birthday, Sodhi got the wicket of Kohli in both teams’ second match of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2021 and became the first T20I bowler to take his wicket thrice.
Coming to bat at no.4, the Indian skipper tried to release the pressure with a big shot but could not get the distance. He was caught at long on by Trent Boult becoming Sodhi’s second victim of the day. The 32-year-old faced 17 deliveries and could score only nine runs during his short stay at the crease. He could not score a single boundary in his innings.
Earlier, Sodhi got the wicket of veteran Rohit Sharma as well. Sodhi conceded 17 runs in the four overs he bowled. He did not concede a single boundary in his spell.
Previous dismissals
The first time Sodhi got Kohli’s wicket was in the previous edition of T20 World Cup where India were bundled out for their lowest World Cup total of 79. On a spin-friendly Nagpur wicket, Kohli edged it to wicketkeeper Luke Ronchi and lost his wicket after scoring 23 runs.
In 2017, the Ludhiana-born cricketer got Kohli’s wicket in a rain-curtailed game. The leading run-getter in T20Is got out after scoring 13 runs from six deliveries. Interestingly, Boult took his catch this time as well. Also, this is the only time when India won the match after Sodhi got Kohli’s wicket.
