Bangladesh have officially named their squad for ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025, which will be jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka. Nigar Sultana Joty, who previously captained the side in their first-ever World Cup appearance in 2022, will continue to lead the team.
Among the new faces in the squad is wicketkeeper-batter Rubya Haider, who has been called up to the ODI team for the first time. Though she has represented Bangladesh in six T20 Internationals, this will be her maiden ODI call-up for the prestigious tournament.
The Bangladesh squad for the upcoming World Cup includes several young talents, such as Nishita Akter Nishi and Sumaiya Akter, both of whom played in the U19 Women's T20 World Cup earlier this year. Sumaiya, who captained the team in that tournament, has already made her ODI debut, playing against Australia last March.
The youngest player in the squad, Nishita, has two ODI appearances to her name, having debuted against Pakistan in 2023. Bangladesh will begin their World Cup campaign on October 2 in Colombo, where they will face Pakistan. The team, led by Nigar Sultana Joty, will also play two warm-up matches before the tournament begins, taking on South Africa and Sri Lanka on September 25 and 27, respectively.
“Nishita is still young, but she bowls with great maturity," said Sazzad Ahmed Mansur, chief selector of the BCB Women's Wing.
"She is consistent, calm under pressure and her ability to contain left-handers gave her an edge. We believe this experience will serve her well and add depth to our spin attack.
“Sumaiya has been knocking on the door for some time. She brings the ability to occupy the crease and accelerate when needed. With her skill set and fielding standards, she gives us an all-round option in the top order.”
