New ODI World Cup champions were crowned at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai on November 2. South Africa lost to India in Women’s ODI World Cup 2025 final, which is going to Marizanne Kapp’s final appearance in the format’s mega event. As Marizanne struggled to hold back tears after the 52-run loss, her Delhi Capitals (DC) teammates Jemimah Rodrigues and Radha Yadav consoled her. India ODI vice-captain Smriti Mandhana also had a word with the Proteas all-rounder.
In the final, Marizanne remained wicketless in her quota of 10 overs and conceded 59 runs. With the bat, she fell to part-time spinner Shafali Verma for a single-digit score.
Marizanne claimed 12 wickets from nine games at an average of 20.25, including a fifer in the semifinal against England to blow them away.
Wolvaardt lauds Marizanne
After the defeat, South Africa captain Laura Wolvaardt said that she feels sad that Marizanne could not win the World Cup on her last attempt.
“She's been absolutely phenomenal for so many editions of this tournament. Really sad that it's possibly the last one. I think the whole group really wanted to win it for her. But yeah, I think she's been so great for South African cricket. She's sort of two players in one. And we're very lucky that she's on our team,” Wolvaardt said in the post-match presentation.
Next target for Kapp
Last year, Wolvaardt had decided to retire from international cricket. However, she rolled it back after conversations with Cricket South Africa director of cricket Enoch Nkwe. Her next target will be the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 which is scheduled to be played from June 12 to July 5 on English soil.
This is South Africa have been placed in Group B alongside India, Australia, Pakistan and one other opponent which is yet to confirm their qualification.
The 35-year-old is likely to be seen in action when Ireland tour South Africa next month for three T20Is and as many ODIs.
