New Zealand skipper Sophie Devine officially retired from One Day Internationals after playing her farewell match on October 26 during the ongoing Women's World Cup. However, her last match didn't pan out the way she wanted as New Zealand suffered an 8-wicket defeat against England in their last league match of the Women's World Cup 2025 at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam, which was Devine's 159th ODI appearance.

In her last dance, Devine contributed 23 runs off 35 balls and managed to pick up one wicket with the ball. Following England's comprehensive eight-wicket victory, she was given a well-deserved guard of honour by both the England and New Zealand players to mark the end of her distinguished ODI career.

“Disappointing. Not to make it about myself, I wanted to go out on a high and today’s performance wasn’t that. Credit to England, they stuck at it and did the job with the bat," Devine said during the post-match presentation.

Sophie Devine's illustrious ODI career

Devine made her ODI debut on October 22, 2006, against Australia. Over the course of her career, she accumulated a total of 4,279 runs in the format. This impressive tally includes nine centuries, with her ninth ton having been scored during the recently concluded World Cup. Her highest individual score remains 145 off 131 balls against South Africa during the 2013 World Cup, which was also held in India.

With the ball, Devine was equally impactful, claiming 111 wickets in her ODI career. Her best bowling figures of three for 24 were achieved during the West Indies' tour of New Zealand in 2018. This dual contribution makes her the only Kiwi player, and just the third player overall, to achieve the elite milestone of scoring over 4,000 runs and taking over 100 wickets in the ODI format.

Devine had served as captain since 2020, leading New Zealand to T20 World Cup glory last year in Dubai. Although she has retired from ODIs, she will remain available to play T20 Internationals. It's worth noting that Devine has prioritized her mental well-being in recent years, having taken a break from international.
