Former India captain Sourav Ganguly feels that the selection committee have made the right call by handing Shubman Gill the leadership duties ahead of the three-match ODI series against Australia. He further expressed hope that the selectors must have spoken to Rohit before taking captaincy from him as he was an incredibly successfully leader.
“I am sure Rohit must have been spoken to. I am sure it's a mutual discussion. Rohit has been an outstanding leader. He has won the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy,” Ganguly told reporters.
“Even Shubman Gill will face the same at 40. Everyone in sport has to finish someday. Not a bad decision to promote Gill. He's shown a lot of talent in England. I think it's a fair call... Rohit can keep playing while you groom a young captain,” he added.
Ganguly then went on to congratulate Gill for being appointed as the skipper and highlighted how the latter was considred for the role as he had done incredibly well during the tour against England.
“I congratulate him. He has done well in England; he will do well in the future as well. The Indian team is very good. All the players perform well and that is why they have been given the chance,” Ganguly stated.
Gill's rapid rise
Gill has now become India's captain in two out of three formats. The 26-year-old has been on a rise ever since the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy where he was one of the side's key players throughout their campaign. He is also the Men in Blue's vice-captain when it comes to the shortest format and it is expected that he will be the one to succeed Suryakumar Yadav as the T20I skipper in the coming future.
Rohit and Virat set for international return
Meanwhile, the upcoming ODI series between India and Australia will see both Rohit and Virat Kohli make their much-awaited returns to international cricket. The duo haven't donned the Indian jersey since the Champions Trophy final against New Zealand in March and will be hoping to return with a bang in the first match against the Aussies.
