India ODI captain Rohit Sharma and batting great Virat Kohli will most likely be picked in the India A squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Australia A. India A are scheduled to play a three-match unofficial ODIs against Australia A at Green Park Stadium in Kanpur, which will take place on September 30, October 3 and October 5.
Hindustan Times reported that Rohit and Virat will likely be picked for the three 50-over matches.
The batting duo announced their retirement from Test cricket in May 2025 during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 and have not played any competitive cricket since the conclusion of the 18th edition of the cash-rich league.
The report further stated that Kohli, who is currently spending time with his family in London, will travel to India this month and “may undergo a round of fitness assessments in Bengaluru."
Rohit and Virat's last international outing was on March 9, 2025, during the final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, where unbeaten India defeated New Zealand to win the title at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai. Rohit was awarded Player of the Match in the title decider for his 76 off an 83-ball knock as an opener in the 252-run chase.
On the other hand, Kohli, who failed to perform in the finale, scored 84 runs from 98 balls against Australia in the first semifinal on March 4 and had remained unbeaten on 100 runs from 111 balls against Pakistan in Dubai on February 23. On both occasions, the 36-year-old right-handed batter won POTM awards.
If Virat and Rohit feature for India A, then it will also help them prepare for the three-match ODI series against the Australian team in Australia.
Team India are scheduled to travel to Australia next month for the three-match ODI series, followed by a five-match T20I series. The ODI matches will take place in Perth, Adelaide and Sydney on October 19, 23 and 25, respectively. In contrast, the five T20Is will be played in Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Gold Coast and Brisbane on October 29, October 31, November 2, November 6 and November 8, respectively.
