Jasprit Bumrah breaks Kapil Dev's 32-year-old record in Australia with twin strikes with new ball on Day 5

India's pace-bowling spearhead Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc with the new ball dismissing opener Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne on Day 5 of the Gabba Test. Bumrah broke legendary all-rounder Kapil Dev's record for most wickets on Australian soil by an Indian. 

The former Indian captain had 51 wickets from 11 Tests at an average of 24.58 including five five-wicket hauls. Bumrah surpassed Dev's 32-year-old record in his 10th Test on Australian soil. His bowling average is just over 17 in Australian conditions.

Bumrah's wickets on Day 5

His first wicket of the day was Khawaja. He came round the wicket to the left-handed batter. The Australian opener played a loose shot and the ball crashed into the stumps. He scored eight runs from seven balls. In his fourth over of the day, Marnus Labuschagne edged one playing a loose shot away from his body. Rishabh Pant took a regulation catch as Rishabh Pant took a regulation catch.

In his first spell, Bumrah bowled five overs including one maiden, conceded 14 runs. He came back into the attack when Pat Cummins hit Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep for a six each. Bumrah ended Cummins cameo as the Autsralia captain went for a slop and was caught by KL Rahul at covers. The skipper scored 22 runs from 10 balls. Australia declared the innings after 89/7 from 18 overs. Australia have set a target of 275 for India but the Test is headed for a draw with rain playing spoilsport.

Bumrah comes close to breaking own record

Bumrah returned with match figures of 94/9. This is the second-best bowling figures by an Indian seamer in Australia. The record belongs to him as well with nine wickets for 86 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in 2018.

Bumrah saves India from follow-on

Bumrah held on while Akash Deep launched an onslaught to save India from facing follow-on. He remained unbeaten for 10 off 27 balls as India were bowled out for 260.
