Shubman Gill closes in on no.1 spot, Bumrah returns in ICC ODI rankings with Brook's wicket in series opener

India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill is closing in on the no.1 spot in the ICC ODI batter rankings. Gill scored 80 runs from 75 balls before he returned to the dressing room retired hurt in the successful run chase against England in the ODI series opener. Gill gained 12 points and is now just 11 points shy of the top-ranked New Zealand batter Daryl Mitchell.

Gill (803 points) is followed by teammates Virat Kohli (757 points), Rohit Sharma (744 points). There were a couple of more changes in top 10. West Indies' skipper Shai Hope went up one place to sixth with an unbeaten half-century and a single-digit score in the run chase against New Zealand in the ongoing five-ODI series. It led to Babar Azam slipping to the seventh spot. Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis entered the top 10 as England skipper Harry Brook slipped to 11th spot.

Root moves up, Curran’s big gain

England's veteran batter Joe Root and West Indies' Keacy Carty went up six and five places each to claim 12th and 19th spot respectively. Root scored a half-century in a losing cause against India whereas Carty scored 95 in series opener against New Zealand. Bangladesh opener Tanzid Hasan has jumped 12 places to 25th with two fifties in recently-concluded ODI series against Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe opener Ben Curran scored an unbeaten 111 against Bangladesh and made a huge 31-place jump to take 34th spot.

Archer down, Bumrah returns to rankings after long ODI absence

In the ICC ODI bowler rankings, England pacer Jofra Archer moved down one place to fourth, giving his third spot to South Africa's Keshav Maharaj. New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner climbed three places to take seventh place with performances on Caribbean tour. Bangladesh's Shoriful Islam and West Indies' Gudakesh Motie went up six places each to 15th and 16th spot respectively.

Meanwhile, India's pace-bowling spearhead returned to the rankings, taking the 24th spot after taking a wicket of England skipper Brook. This was Bumrah's first ODI appearance since the ODI World Cup 2023 final. He bowled nine overs and conceded just 31 runs.

Big gain for Axar

There were changes in the ICC ODI all-rounder rankings too. Bangladesh skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz moved up to second place whereas Zimbabwe's Sikandar Raza slipped to third. With a half-century and a four-wicket haul against England, Axar moved up three places to take ninth spot.
