In a much-needed turnaround, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) finally snapped their six-game losing streak in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 by defeating the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on April 25. Their bowlers did a fantastic job containing a dangerous SRH batting lineup, securing a 35-run victory. This win, though it keeps them at the bottom of the points table, opens a narrow window for RCB to qualify for the playoffs.
RCB's road to IPL 2024's playoffs
With five matches remaining, RCB still hold a mathematical chance of finishing in the coveted top four. However, the road ahead is steep. RCB needs to win all their remaining games to reach 14 points. Even then, their qualification hinges on other teams' performances. Ideally, only one of SRH, Lucknow Super Giants, Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, and Gujarat Titans should reach 14 points. Additionally, if multiple teams end up on 14 points, RCB will need a superior Net Run Rate to secure a playoff spot.
The qualification scenario gets even more complex. If two of the mentioned teams (SRH, Lucknow Super Giants, Delhi Capitals, Chennai Super Kings, and Gujarat Titans) manage to reach 16 points, RCB's playoff dreams are over. On the other hand, any loss by RCB in their remaining matches also eliminates them from contention.

RCB dependent on other teams for top 4 spot
RCB's playoff hopes are precariously balanced on the results of the current top three teams in the IPL standings. Let's explore a scenario:
Imagine Rajasthan Royals (RR) win four out of their next six matches, while Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) manage victories in five of their remaining games. This strong performance by the top contenders would likely see them end the group stage with a significant points lead – potentially 22, 20, and 20 points respectively. This outcome, however, could create a narrow window of opportunity for RCB. If they manage to win all their remaining matches, they could reach 14 points. This would put them in contention for a potential fourth-place finish, but with a significant caveat. Other teams vying for a playoff spot, like Delhi Capitals and Chennai Super Kings, would also need to falter and finish with a maximum of 12 points or even less.
In the IPL with a 10-team format, typically a minimum of 16 points is needed to qualify for the playoffs. This has been the case since the league expanded to 10 teams. Previously, from 2018 to 2021, the fourth and final playoff spot sometimes went to a team with 14 points. However, with the addition of two more teams since 2022, competition has increased, making it tougher for teams with less than 16 points to reach the knockout stages.
RCB's dominant win over SRH
Now, let's look at RCB's performance in the winning match against SRH. They had a solid start, scoring 61 runs during the powerplay. The young talent Rajat Patidar impressed with a blazing 19-ball fifty before being dismissed by Unadkat. Virat Kohli, however, struggled with his timing, reaching his half-century in a slow 37 balls before Unadkat removed him for a disappointing 51 off 43 balls. Thankfully, a rapid 37-run knock from Cameron Green in just 20 balls helped RCB reach a competitive total of 206. Unadkat, despite dismissing both Kohli and Patidar, emerged as the most successful bowler for SRH with his three-wicket haul.
The bowlers then stepped up for RCB and the troika of Swapnil Singh, Cameron Green and Karn Sharma took two wickets each to restrict SRH to 171/8 to end their team's six-match losing streak. RCB will next take on Gujarat Titans on April 28.
