The inaugural edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was played in 2008, several months after India’s T20 World Cup 2007 triumph. The first edition of the cash-rich franchise league was sensational. There have been several records created over 16 editions of the IPL. Ahead of the 17th season, here is a look at the many firsts of IPL.
First ball
Praveen Kumar bowled the first delivery of the IPL. Sourav Ganguly faced the delivery and took a single via leg byes.
First four
Brendon McCullum scored the first boundary of the IPL. He hit Zaheer Khan for a four over midwicket.
First six
McCullum also hit the first six of IPL. On the fourth ball of Zaheer's first over, McCullum went down the track to hit the ball down the ground but the thick outside edge flew over third man boundary for a maximum.
First wicket
Zaheer took the first wicket. Ganguly became his victim as he went for a loose drive and the outside edge carried to slip fielder Jacques Kallis.
First fifty
McCullum became the first batter to cross the 50-run mark in IPL. He achieved the milestone from 32 balls.
First century
McCullum did not stop after scoring a half-century. He became IPL's first centurion from just 53 balls. Later, McCullum also became the first to score a 150. He also won the ‘Player of the Match’ award as RCB beat KKR by 140 runs.
First run out
RCB's Ashley Noffke became the first batter to get run out. Ajit Agarkar threw the ball from deep backward square leg and Wriddhiman Saha took off the bails.
First maiden over
Glenn McGrath who played for Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) bowled the first maiden over of IPL. He bowled the maiden over against Rajasthan Royals' Taruwar Kohli and Shane Watson in third match of IPL 2008. Taruwar got out on the third ball whereas Watson played the last three deliveries.
First stumping
Robin Uthappa who played for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the inaugural season became the first to get out stumped. In the fifth match of the season, he got stumped out by Mark Boucher off RCB bowler Balachandra Akhil's bowling.
First five-wicket haul
Rajasthan Royals' Sohail Tanvir became the first bowler to take a five-wicket haul in IPL. He picked up six wickets for just 14 runs against Chennai Super Kings (CSK). His record for best bowling figures remained unbroken for nearly 11 years.
First hat-trick
CSK's Lakshmipathy Balaji took the first-ever IPL hat-trick. He took three wickets in the last over of the clash against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings).
First IPL champion
Shane Warne-led RR won the inaugural season of IPL with a three-wicket win over CSK in a thrilling encounter that went down to the last ball.
First Orange Cap
Punjab-based franchise's opening batter Shaun Marsh won the first orange cap. He scored 616 runs from 11 games at an average of 68.44 including one century and five half-centuries.
First Purple Cap
RR's Tanvir took the most wickets in IPL 2008. He took 22 wickets from 11 games at an average of 12.09. His economy rate was an impressive 6.46 runs per over.
First super over
The first-ever super over took place in the second season of the IPL match between KKR and RR. Yusuf Pathan went berserk and smashed two sixes and a four to help RR win the first super over.
First time DRS was used
The first time DRS was used in IPL was in the 2018 edition. MI's Evin Lewis was adjudged lbw and he went for the review. The decision wasn't reversed and Deepak Chahar got Lewis’ wicket.
First impact player
In the IPL 2023 opener, CSK's Tushar Deshpande became the first-ever impact player of the league. He went for 51 runs from 3.2 overs and picked up one wicket. He replaced Ambati Rayudu on CSK's side against Gujarat Titans (GT).
