Story Highlights:

Tim David was fined 50% of his match fee for a Code of Conduct breach during the IPL 2026 final.

The RCB batter accumulated five Demerit Points and will miss the first game of IPL 2027.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Tim David has been handed a one-match suspension for the next Indian Premier League (IPL) season after breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the IPL 2026 final against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The Australian all-rounder was fined 50% of his match fee and also received two Demerit Points following an incident that occurred during RCB’s title-winning clash against GT.

The punishment comes shortly after RCB secured their second consecutive IPL title, defeating GT by five wickets in the summit clash.

Tim David fined and suspended after final-day incident

According to an official IPL statement, David was found guilty of breaching Article 2.9 of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials.

The article relates to:

"throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Team Official, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a Match."

The incident took place during the 10th over of GT’s innings. Following the fall of a wicket, David reportedly threw an ice bag aggressively in the direction of on-field umpire Nitin Menon.

After the incident was reviewed, Tim David admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction imposed by Match Referee Javagal Srinath.

As a result, the batter was fined 50% of his match fee and awarded two additional Demerit Points.

Accumulated Demerit Points trigger IPL 2027 suspension

The latest offence proved costly for David as it was his third Level 1 breach of the IPL Code of Conduct during the 2026 season.

The RCB batter had earlier received one Demerit Point in Match 20 and two Demerit Points in Match 54. The latest incident added another two points to his tally, taking his total to five Demerit Points.

Under IPL regulations, accumulating five Demerit Points results in a one-match suspension.

Consequently, Tim David will miss the opening match of IPL 2027 for whichever franchise he represents next season.

The disciplinary action comes despite an otherwise memorable campaign for RCB, who successfully defended their IPL crown and became only the third team in tournament history to win back-to-back titles after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians.
