KKR eked out a four-wicket win over MI

This win kept KKR afloat in IPL 2026 playoff contention

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) kept their IPL 2026 playoff hopes alive on May 20 with a hard-fought four-wicket win over the already eliminated Mumbai Indians (MI) in a rain-interrupted clash at Eden Gardens.

KKR get the better of MI to stay alive in IPL 2026 playoff race

With this crucial victory, their sixth win in their last seven outings, KKR have kept their playoff dreams alive and kicking. KKR now sits in sixth place on the points table with a balanced record of six wins, six losses, and one no-result. On the other hand, the struggling Mumbai Indians remain languishing at the ninth spot, having managed just four wins against nine losses this season.

Manish-Powell's crucial knocks in KKR's win

Chasing a modest target of 148 runs, KKR's innings got off to a fiery but brief start. Opener Finn Allen cracked two boundaries off Deepak Chahar's opening over, only to be dismissed on the fifth ball for 8 runs, leaving KKR at 10/1. Skipper Ajinkya Rahane then joined Manish Pandey, and the duo batted with caution until the fourth over, where they suddenly broke the shackles to loot 14 runs off Jasprit Bumrah using three well-timed boundaries.

The promising 38-run partnership was cut short in the eighth over by Corbin Bosch, who turned the game on its head by removing Rahane for 21. Bosch struck again in the exact same over to dismiss Cameron Green for just 4, quickly reducing KKR to a tense 54/3. Undeterred by the double blow, Manish and Rovman Powell steadied the ship, navigating the bowling attack to guide KKR to 84/3 at the halfway mark.

The batsmen continued to accelerate, with Manish cutting a boundary past backward point to bring up KKR's 100-run mark in 12.1 overs. Powell then capped off that same over by smashing Raghu Sharma for two consecutive boundaries, bringing the equation down to a comfortable 36 runs needed for victory. Bumrah provided a crucial breakthrough shortly after, dismissing Manish for a well-made 45 off 33 balls, leaving KKR at 118/4 with 30 runs required from the final five overs.

The drama intensified when Allah Ghazanfar removed Powell for a impactful 40 off 30 balls, courtesy of a rocket shot that flew straight into the hands of Bosch. With the score at 124/5, Tejasvi Dahiya (11) and Rinku Singh combined to edge KKR closer to the finish line. Though Bosch threw in a late twist by dismissing Dahiya in the 19th over, Rinku (9*) and Anukul Roy (4*) held their nerve to cross the line at 148/6 with seven balls to spare.

Corbin Bosch's all-round show in vain

Earlier, KKR produced a highly disciplined bowling performance to restrict MI to a modest 147/8 during their IPL 2026 encounter at Eden Gardens on Wednesday. After being invited to bat first, Mumbai started cautiously, crawling to 10/0 in the first two overs. However, the momentum shifted drastically in the third over when KKR all-rounder Cameron Green struck twice, removing Ryan Rickelton for six and dismissing Naman Dhir for a three-ball duck to leave the visitors reeling.

The pressure intensified in the following over when Saurabh Dubey dismissed Rohit Sharma for 15, reducing Mumbai to a precarious 24/3. Dubey struck again in the final over of the powerplay, removing the dangerous Suryakumar Yadav for 15. Despite the mounting pressure, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya managed to guide Mumbai to 57/4 after eight overs before a sudden rain delay forced a temporary halt to the proceedings.

When play resumed, the two batters continued their cautious rebuilding job, taking Mumbai to 64/4 at the halfway mark. The resistance was broken in the 14th over when pacer Kartik Tyagi claimed his first wicket by dismissing Tilak Varma for 20. Mumbai's slide continued in the 16th over when veteran spinner Sunil Narine clean-bowled skipper Hardik Pandya for 26, leaving the innings in deep trouble at 88/5.

A major mix-up in the 17th over resulted in Will Jacks being run out for 14, and by the end of the 18th over, Mumbai was staring at a dismal total at 115/7. However, Corbin Bosch provided a much-needed late flourish, smashing an unbeaten 32 off just 18 balls. His valuable cameo in the death overs single-handedly dragged the Mumbai Indians to a respectable fighting total of 147/8.

KKR's bowling unit excelled by hunting in pairs and sharing the rewards. Cameron Green was the pick of the bowlers with clinical figures of 2/23, while Saurabh Dubey and Kartik Tyagi chipped in effectively with 2/34 and 2/37, respectively. The ever-economical Sunil Narine also played a pivotal role in choking the run flow, finishing his spell with suffocating figures of 1/13.
