Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have handed Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) their fourth successive defeat in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 clash at the MA Chidambaram stadium on April 14.
CSK thrash KKR by 32 runs
CSK first posted a competitive total of 192/5 riding on Sanju Samson's 48 and Dewald Brevis' 41. In reply, KKR batters never looked at ease in chase and were eventually bundled out for 160/7, thanks to Noor Ahmad's magical 3/21. It was CSK's second straight win in the ongoing season.

Following their victory over KKR, CSK have climbed to eighth place in the IPL 2026 standings, overtaking the Mumbai Indians. Although they are now tied on four points with Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Titans, and Lucknow Super Giants, a lower net run rate keeps them at the bottom of that specific group.
In contrast, KKR remain rooted to the bottom of the table. With only one point from their five matches, they are currently the only franchise yet to secure a victory in the 2026 season.
KKR's dismal chase
KKR' chase crumbled in spectacular fashion as left-arm wrist spinner Noor Ahmed dismantled their middle order. Finishing with clinical figures of 3/21, Noor exploited a gripping surface to remove Ajinkya Rahane, Rinku Singh, and Cameron Green in quick succession. This collapse saw KKR slide from a relatively stable 79/2 to a precarious 90/6, effectively ending their hopes of a comeback. He was well-supported by Akeal Hossain, whose disciplined four-over spell for just 26 runs kept the batters under constant pressure.
Earlier in the innings, the partnership between Rahane and Angkrish Raghuvanshi drew significant criticism for its lack of modern T20 intent. Despite adding 50 runs in just over five overs, their conservative approach felt outdated, reminiscent of batting tactics from a decade ago. This strategic failure has highlighted a growing issue for the Shah Rukh Khan-owned franchise, as the reliance on the Mumbai duo in the top four has coincided with a disastrous run that has seen the team lose four of its first five matches. Much of the accountability for these tactical missteps is now being directed toward the team's coaching staff and management.
Noor Ahmad leaves KKR batters in a spin
On the field, CSK' skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad masterfully exploited Rahane’s long-standing struggle against slow bowling, a move that left the veteran batter visibly frustrated during the Powerplay. However, the victory was also set up by the CSK pace attack. Anshul Kamboj and Khaleel Ahmed delivered crucial breakthroughs by dismissing dangerous openers Finn Allen and Sunil Narine early, ensuring the chase never gained momentum.
By the time impactful hitters like Rovman Powell and Ramandeep Singh arrived at the crease, the required run rate had climbed beyond reach. Despite their late cameos, Powell scoring 31 and Ramandeep remaining unbeaten on 35, the damage inflicted by the top-order stagnation and Noor Ahmed's spin masterclass was irreversible. With this result, CSK has successfully steadied their campaign with two consecutive wins, while KKR remains searching for answers at the bottom of the table.
Ayush Mhatre's powerful knock in CSK's win
Earlier, CSK set a formidable target of 192/5. After electing to bat, the hosts signaled their aggressive intent immediately through Sanju Samson, who launched a flurry of boundaries in the very first over. Despite the early loss of captain Ruturaj Gaikwad for just seven, the early onslaught remained relentless.
The Powerplay belonged to young Ayush Mhatre, whose explosive 38 off 17 balls electrified the Chepauk crowd. Targeting the pace of Cameron Green and Vaibhav Arora, Mhatre’s fearless strokeplay propelled CSK to a commanding 72/2 by the end of the sixth over. Samson provided stability alongside the fireworks, crafting a fluent 48 off 32 deliveries before a sharp inswinger from Kartik Tyagi denied him a half-century and gave KKR a vital opening.

Kolkata mounted a late comeback led by Kartik Tyagi, who showcased excellent control and variations under pressure to finish with figures of 2/35. Tyagi’s disciplined death bowling, supported by Narine's clever variations, prevented the likes of Shivam Dube and Jamie Overton from finding the boundary in the closing stages. Although CSK failed to fully capitalize on their strong position of 162/3 at the 16-over mark, the foundation laid by Samson, Mhatre, and Brevis ensured a highly competitive total on a challenging surface.
