Kevin Pietersen has left the role of Delhi Capitals mentor ahead of IPL 2026

Kevin Pietersen has officially stepped down from his role as the mentor for the Delhi Capitals ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, marking the end of his short tenure with the team.

Kevin Pietersen no more Delhi Capitals' mentor

The former England captain, now 45, originally joined the franchise’s leadership staff ahead of the 2025 season, a move that was seen as a homecoming given his previous history as a star player for the Delhi side.

I cannot commit the time that the role requires: Pietersen

The timing of his departure is particularly notable, occurring only weeks before the 19th edition of the IPL kicks off on March 28. Pietersen explained that his decision was based on an inability to dedicate the necessary time to the mentorship role. However, he reassured supporters that he won't be disappearing from the circuit entirely, as he plans to remain a fixture of the tournament through his work in the commentary box.

“I will not be able to serve as a mentor for Delhi Capitals in this IPL season. I cannot commit the time that the role requires. Wishing all the players the very best for this season! However, you will see me back in the commentary box! IPL is the best league in the world, and I can’t wait to see all of you very soon!,” Pietersen wrote on X.

Delhi Capitals are looking to rebound after a bittersweet 2025 campaign where they narrowly missed the playoffs, finishing fifth in the standings. Under the leadership of Axar Patel, the squad managed to accumulate 15 points through seven victories and six losses, with one match unfortunately lost to rain. While the team showed flashes of brilliance, they ultimately lacked the consistency needed to secure a top-four spot during the season's most critical stretches.

Individually, the team boasted some heavy hitters and elite specialists. KL Rahul anchored the batting lineup as the standout performer with an impressive 539 runs, while Kuldeep Yadav remained the focal point of the bowling attack, claiming 15 wickets. These performances provided a solid foundation, even if the collective results didn't quite carry the team into the postseason.

Heading into the 2026 auction, the Capitals opted for stability by retaining their high-profile core, including Patel, Rahul, Yadav, and Mitchell Starc. To address previous gaps, they successfully bolstered their roster with seasoned internationals like David Miller and Ben Duckett for middle-order power, alongside Pathum Nissanka. They also reinforced their pace battery by signing Lungi Ngidi and Kyle Jamieson, signaling a clear intent to improve their finishing strength and bowling depth.

The franchise is now gearing up for the 19th edition of the league, with their 2026 season opener scheduled for Wednesday, April 1. They will face off against the Lucknow Super Giants at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium, looking to set a strong tone for the year ahead.
