In a big setback Kolkata Knight Riders, all-rounder Harshit Rana has been reportedly ruled out of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The 24-year-old sustained a serious knee injury during a warm-up fixture against South Africa in Navi Mumbai just prior to the T20 World Cup and has been sidelined ever since. Despite undergoing surgery in Mumbai on February 9, his recovery timeline will not allow him to return to the field in time for the high-stakes tournament.
Harshit Rana ruled out of IPL 2026?
Rana’s absence leaves a massive void in the KKR lineup, given his meteoric rise over the last two years. He was a cornerstone of their 2024 title-winning campaign, where his 19-wicket haul propelled him into the national spotlight as a multi-format regular for India. Recognizing his value, the franchise retained him for Rs 4 crore ahead of the 2025 season, a faith he rewarded by claiming 15 wickets in 13 matches.
As the team prepares for the new edition, the management has yet to name a formal replacement for the injured star. Instead, KKR appears to be looking inward, expecting their existing pace battery, including Akash Deep, Vaibhav Arora, Umran Malik, and Kartik Tyagi, to step up. This unfortunate injury opens the door for these young fast bowlers to seize more prominent roles and prove their worth in the absence of a key frontline bowler.
"Harshit Rana unfortunately will not be available but it gives the opportunity to other bowlers in the squad Vaibhav, Umran, Kartik and Akash - to step up and grab the opportunity. No replacement has been decided yet," a source told Timesofindia.com.
KKR rope in Blessing Muzarabani ahead of IPL 2026
In addition to the loss of Harshit Rana, KKR are facing further uncertainty regarding the availability of Matheesha Pathirana. The Sri Lankan slinger is currently in a race against time to recover from an injury sustained during the T20 World Cup, leaving his participation in the early stages of the season in doubt. To address these growing concerns in the pace department, the franchise moved quickly on Friday to secure the services of Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani.
The towering 6 ft 8 in right-arm pacer has evolved into a premier force in Zimbabwe’s T20 lineup. His primary weapon is the steep, uncomfortable bounce he generates from a high release point, which has proven highly effective at picking up wickets during the powerplay and the death overs. This tactical acquisition provides KKR with a specialized bounce option that could be particularly effective on the truer surfaces of the IPL.
Muzarabani’s will be more than just a backup. With over 90 wickets in 80 T20 Internationals and a sharp average of approximately 21, he brings a wealth of international experience to the squad. His career-best figures of 3/8 highlight his ability to dismantle batting orders when he finds his rhythm.
