Former India's ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has provided an encouraging update on MS Dhoni’s availability for the remainder of IPL 2026. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin expressed confidence that the veteran leader is poised to return to action for the highly anticipated marquee clash against the Mumbai Indians on April 23. Dhoni has been sidelined for the first six matches of the season while recovering from a calf strain, a loss that has been keenly felt by the franchise.
When will MS Dhoni return in IPL 2026? R Ashwin reveals
Dhoni’s absence is just one of several critical issues currently hindering CSK. The team has been plagued by a series of injuries, starting with the loss of Nathan Ellis before the season began. Although Spencer Johnson was named his replacement, his late arrival further disrupted the team's preparations. Additionally, Dewald Brevis, who had recently made a comeback, appears to have picked up another injury, while both Khaleel Ahmed and Ayush Mhatre have been completely ruled out of the tournament. With CSK yet to sign replacements for the latter two, the constant shuffling has severely compromised the team’s stability.
Dhoni will play and he will keep wickets: Ashwin
These compounding personnel struggles are clearly reflected in the team's performance, as CSK currently sits eighth on the points table with only two wins from their first six outings. The middle order has lacked the composure and direction usually provided by Dhoni, while the bowling unit has struggled to find a consistent rhythm. The return of their captain is expected to provide much-needed leadership as the team looks to steady their campaign.
"There is great news, I have never seen him [Dhoni] keep wickets in the nets. This means that Dhoni will play and he will keep wickets and Sanju [Samson] will play as an outfielder". Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Ashwin expressed deep personal certainty that Dhoni’s return to the field is imminent. Based on his long-standing professional relationship and his deep understanding of the legendary captain's work ethic, he is convinced that a comeback for Dhoni is a definite eventuality.
"He might also come in as an Impact Player, but I am 100% sure that he will play. Based on what I have heard, he is fit and good to go." Ashwin concluded.
Talking about CSK's performance in the ongoing season, they are placed at eights spot with just two wins in six matches.
