Former India star batter Wasim Jaffer has raised concerns regarding the form of embattled Suryakumar Yadav, suggesting that his shot selection has become increasingly predictable. Jaffer argues that opposition teams have successfully mapped out his strengths, and Suryakumar's failure to develop a reliable backup plan when faced with counter-defensive fields is frequently leading to his dismissal.
SKY is getting trapped in a similar fashion again and again: Wasim Jaffer
This critique follows a difficult outing for Yadav during the Mumbai Indians' heavy defeat against their rivals, Chennai Super Kings (CSK), at Wankhede Stadium on April 23. Tasked with chasing a formidable target of 208, Mumbai found themselves in deep trouble at 11/3 early on. Yadav managed 36 runs off 30 balls but could not anchor the innings, contributing to a massive 103-run loss. His performance throughout the tournament has been underwhelming, totaling just 157 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 142.73, with his only notable contribution being a half-century against the Delhi Capitals while serving as stand-in captain.

Jaffer believes that Suryakumar’s current struggles stem from bowlers tightening their lines, effectively denying him the space required to execute his signature shots behind the wicket. To regain his form, Jaffer suggests that the batter needs to pivot his strategy and focus on playing more shots down the ground and in front of the wicket, rather than relying solely on his traditional scoring areas.
“SKY (Surya) is getting trapped in a similar fashion again and again. Teams set fields to restrict his leg-side and behind-the-wicket shots. He needs a plan B. Maybe go straighter or hit over covers. Don’t be predictable. Too good a player to get caught in the same trap,” Jaffer's X post read.

Suryakumar's rusty knock in MI's losing cause
Suryakumar’s innings came to an end in the 14th over, falling to a delivery from Akeal Hosein. Attempting to play a sweep, the right-hander unfortunately top-edged the ball, sending it straight toward deep backward square leg where Sarfaraz Khan completed a simple catch. Before his dismissal, Surya had worked to stabilise MI's innings alongside Tilak Varma. The duo successfully navigated a difficult start, stitching together a 73-run partnership to rebuild the innings following an early collapse. Despite this spirited effort, CSK maintained their dominance at Wankhede Stadium, ultimately securing a comfortable victory by bundling out MI for a paltry 104.
