Three of India's U-19 World Cup winning captains remained unsold in IPL 2025 mega auction

Some of the big names including David Warner, Shardul Thakur also went unsold in the auction

The glitzy IPL 2025 mega auction saw a total of 577 players going under the hammer in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia out of which only 182 players found the bidders. The 10 franchise shelled out a whopping Rs. 639.15 crores to buy their favourite players in order to build a solid squad for the 18th season of the IPL. The auction was a historic event in itself, with franchises breaking spending records to acquire top talents. The Lucknow Super Giants made headlines by securing Rishabh Pant for a staggering Rs 27 crore, while the Punjab Kings acquired Shreyas Iyer for Rs 26.75 crore. Venkatesh Iyer also turned heads after re-joining Kolkata Knight Riders for a massive amount of Rs 23.75 crore.

While, big signings hogged limelight in the auction, there were some high-profile players who went unsold. Notably, David Warner, the captain of the 2016 IPL-winning team, failed to attract any bids. Shardul Thakur was another notable player who did not receive any offers. But what surprised the most was the three former India U-19 World Cup-winning captains who couldn't attract the bidders. One such player was Prithvi Shaw, who failed to attract any bids at his base price of Rs 75 lakh.

Shaw has recently faced setbacks due to fitness issues, leading to his exclusion from the Mumbai Ranji Trophy team. Despite captaining India's U-19 World Cup-winning team under the guidance of Rahul Dravid in 2018, Shaw's recent struggles impacted his auction prospects.

Yash Dhull, another former India U-19 World Cup-winning captain, also went unsold in the IPL 2025 Mega Auction. He led India to victory in the 2022 World Cup and was associated with the Delhi Capitals from 2022 to 2024, though he only managed to play four matches in 2023.

Unmukt Chand, the third former U-19 World Cup-winning captain, faced a similar fate. His name was not even announced during the auction, indicating that no team expressed interest in acquiring his services.

Unmukt Chand, who captained India to a U-19 World Cup victory in 2012, had already experienced IPL action with the Delhi Daredevils prior to his international triumph. After retiring from Indian cricket in 2021, he relocated to the USA. Despite registering for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction as an overseas player with a base price of Rs 30 lakh, he did not receive any bids from the franchises.
