A major shake-up unfolded in the Indian Premier League landscape after Lucknow Super Giants officially confirmed that Rishabh Pant had stepped down from captaincy duties following IPL 2026.
While many initially believed the decision was solely linked to the franchise’s disappointing performances over the last two seasons, reports now suggest that the reasons behind Pant’s exit from leadership run far deeper than just results.
The Indian wicketkeeper-batter reportedly grew increasingly uncomfortable with the overall functioning and decision-making dynamics within the franchise setup, eventually deciding that stepping away from captaincy was the best path forward.

Pant reportedly unhappy with decision-making structure at LSG
According to reports, Pant’s frustrations had been building gradually throughout the IPL 2026 campaign.
The left-hander, who is known for backing his instincts as a leader, reportedly found it difficult to operate freely within a setup where several voices were involved in tactical planning and match-related decisions.
The LSG leadership structure included experienced names like head coach Justin Langer, director Tom Moody, assistant coach Lance Klusener and senior players like Kane Williamson.
While such collaborative systems are common in franchise cricket, Rishabh Pant reportedly preferred having greater control over on-field decisions and tactical calls.
As the season progressed, subtle signs of discomfort became increasingly visible during post-match interactions and team discussions.
One major instance reportedly emerged during the Super Over against Kolkata Knight Riders.
Pant was believed to have preferred sending Ayush Badoni ahead due to his rhythm and confidence at that stage of the game. However, the management backed a different option and eventually Nicholas Pooran was sent out instead.
Though not viewed as a direct confrontation, the moment reportedly highlighted the growing difference in cricketing philosophies between Pant and the management.
Reports further claim that Pant had already informed the franchise during the latter half of IPL 2026 that he wished to step down from captaincy, long before the season officially ended.
Rishabh Pant now wants to focus on reviving his career
Apart from leadership-related discomfort, Pant is also believed to be prioritising the revival of his own cricket career.
The 28-year-old endured another difficult season with the bat and has gradually slipped out of India’s white-ball setup while also losing the Test vice-captaincy role.
The added pressure of captaincy reportedly became an extra burden during an already challenging phase of his career.
Pant is now expected to shift his complete focus towards rediscovering his batting rhythm and reclaiming his place across formats for Team India.

Despite stepping down as captain, reports suggest that Rishabh Pant is likely to remain part of the franchise and continue fulfilling his contract with Lucknow Super Giants.
Meanwhile, LSG are now expected to begin a larger rebuilding process ahead of IPL 2027.
Several reports indicate that names like Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram are among the frontrunners to replace Pant as the next captain of the franchise.
At the same time, Justin Langer’s future as head coach also reportedly remains uncertain as Lucknow prepare for major structural changes following their disastrous IPL 2026 campaign.
