Story Highlights:

Rishabh Pant has quit as LSG's captain

LSG's Director of Cricket Tom Moody confirmed the development

Rishabh Pant has formally stepped down as Lucknow Super Giants' captain after team's nightmarish campaign at the Indian Premier League 2026. Rishabh Pant failed to live up to the expectations and the hefty price tag of Rs 27 crore, which also reflected in his captaincy and individual performance. As a result LSG finished at the bottom of the table which led to Pant's decision of quitting the LSG captaincy. LSG could only muster four wins out of the 14 matches they played.

Rishabh Pant leaves LSG captaincy

LSG's Director of Cricket Tom Moody confirmed that Rishabh Pant requested to be relieved of his captaincy duties with the franchise, and the  franchisee has accepted his request with immediate effect.

"Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) wish to formally announce that Rishabh Pant has requested to be relieved of his captaincy duties with the franchise, and the franchisee has accepted his request with immediate effect," read the statement from Lucknow.

“Rishabh approached the franchisee with this request and we have respectfully accepted it. These decisions are never easy. We are grateful for everything Rishabh has brought to this dressing room as captain. Our focus now is on the collective — rebuilding and restructuring to reach the best standards,” said Moody in the press release.

LSG's dismal show in IPL across two seasons

Pant miserably failed to spearhead the team across two seasons, ultimately struggling to guide them to the playoffs in either campaign. The team's performance bottomed out during the IPL 2026 season, where Lucknow managed to muster just four victories from their 14 matches. This disappointing run followed an equally underwhelming 2025 season that yielded only six wins, leaving Pant with a meager total of 10 victories out of 28 matches during his tenure as captain.

Compounding the team's struggles, Pant's individual batting form suffered a noticeable dip while balancing the pressures of leadership. He managed just 269 runs across 14 matches in the 2025 season and showed only a slight improvement this year, finishing the 2026 campaign with 312 runs.

It will be interesting to see as who would LSG hand the leadership role after Pant's ouster.
