India Test captain Shubman Gill has been injured while batting during the first Test match against South Africa at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. The stylish batter left the field midway, and later he got hospitalised and missed the rest of the clash as India featured with 10 batters, which resulted in a 30-run defeat against South Africa. As India gears up for the second Test, there are reports that Gill will also travel with the team.
However, there are chance that he will miss the second Test match due to the same injury, which is scheduled to take place at ACA Stadium in Guwahati. So, if Shubman misses out for the selection for the second clash. Here are the batters who can replace him for the Guwahati Test.
Karun Nair
Karun Nair, who made his Test comeback after a long time during the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025, failed to perform on England pitches as he had a mixed outing in the five Tests. However, the batter looked in great touch during Ranji matches; he smashed a double century and a century, so considering Indian conditions, the batter will be a like-for-like replacement for Shubman Gill.
Sarfaraz Khan
Mumbai batter is still looking for a reason why he has been dropped from the national side. Sarfaraz's last Test outing came against New Zealand, and after that, he was a part of India's Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 squad, where he was unable to get a single clash, and after that he was dropped from the international side despite strong performances in domestic cricket.
Sai Sudharsan
India batter Sai Sudharsan, who played five Test matches for India as a number three batter in the whites, could bat at number four as Shubman Gill's replacement. The batter scored 87 runs in his last Test for India, but was dropped from the playing XI for the series opener in Kolkata.
Devdutt Patikkal
India star batter Devdutt Padikkal will also be the like-for-like replacement for Shubman Gill as a number four specialist batter. Padikkal has played one Test for India as a No. 4 batter against England in Dharamsala last year and scored 65 runs in the first innings.
Narayan Jagadeesan
Tamil Nadu batter Narayan Jagadeesan is another player who can be picked as Shubman Gill's replacement for the second Test of the Freedom Trophy 2025. Jagadeesan bats in the top order for his domestic side, and he also impressed with his batting in the Duleep Trophy.
