Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) president Rohan Jaitley is expected to take over as the next BCCI secretary if the current secretary, Jay Shah, becomes the new chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Shah has not yet submitted his nomination for the ICC post.
Rohan Jaitley Poised to Become BCCI Secretary
A report in Dainik Bhaskar suggests that there is a growing consensus within the BCCI in favor of Rohan Jaitley, the son of late politician Arun Jaitely, succeeding Shah as the secretary. However, other key officials in the BCCI, including president Roger Binny, will maintain their positions as their terms are not due to expire for another year.
Potential Candidates for BCCI Secretary
In a previous report by PTI, Avishek Dalmiya, former president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), was mentioned as a possible candidate to replace Jay Shah as the BCCI secretary. Other potential candidates include Dilsher Khanna from Punjab, Vipul Phadke from Goa, and Prabhtej Bhatia from Chhattisgarh, a former IPL Governing Council member. However, there remains a possibility that a completely new person could be appointed to the position.
"Obviously, it can happen as there are no hard and fast rules. But if you look at BCCI's power structure, president, secretary and treasurer are three key posts," said a former BCCI secretary.
"There are people who have been in the system and someone just coming and bypassing them normally doesn't happen. But first, is Jay ready to go to the ICC? Even if he doesn't go now, he can go anytime," he added.
Jay Shah's ICC Chairman Bid
Greg Barclay, the current ICC chairman, has announced that he will step down from his position on November 30. This development has fueled speculation that Jay Shah, the BCCI secretary, could be a potential successor.
Shah reportedly enjoys the support of 15 out of 16 members of the ICC Board. However, he has less than a day to decide whether to pursue the role, given that his second term as BCCI secretary is not set to expire for another year.
The new ICC chairman will assume office on December 1, and the deadline for submitting nominations is August 27. If Jay Shah decides to run for the position, he would become the youngest ICC chairman ever. At 35 years old, he would join the ranks of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar as Indian leaders of the ICC.
