For many budding cricketers, representing their state and eventually donning the India jersey remains the ultimate dream. Nearly three decades ago, Saharanpur's Akram Saifi hoped to build a career in cricket and eventually make his way into the state setup. His journey, however, could not progress beyond university cricket as financial and family duties shattered his dreams. However, Akram stayed in close contact with the sport.
Now, his son Ayan Saifi has taken a big leap towards achieving what his father once envisioned. The Uttar Pradesh all-rounder has been selected in India's Under-19 squad for the red-ball series against Australia under-19.
Ayan looks to fulfil father's dream
Ayan Saifi started making his mark for Uttar Pradesh at the Under-16 level with a series of good performances in both departments. During the 2024-25 season, the Saharanpur youngster scored 200 runs while picking up 25 wickets. He continued his decent form into the Under-19 setup in 2025-26, where further solidified his case by amassing a total of 300 runs with 37 wickets.
In an interaction with Hindustan Times, the all-rounder reflected on his selection and his father's unfulfilled dreams. Ayan believes that he is one step closer to achieve what his father wanted in his playing days.
“Now, it’s an opportunity for me to fulfill my father’s dream for India. I heard so many stories about my father’s struggle in the game, but now I feel that I can bring good days of cricket for him,” said Ayan.
When will the series begin?
Ayan has been selected specially for India's red-ball squad for the two multi-day games against Australia Under-19. The first game will start on September 27, followed by the second and final match from October 5. However, he has not been included in the squad for the limited overs leg of the tour.
