Australian women's cricket team star Alyssa Healy found herself in an unusual situation as she had to undergo surgery following a finger injury sustained while attempting to break up a fight between her pet dogs at her home. This incident resulted in her withdrawal from the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL) match between Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder on Sunday, October 22.
The news of the dog attack and Healy's injury came to light when her Australian teammate Phoebe Litchfield disclosed the incident, which was later confirmed by the Sydney Sixers as a "domestic accident at home."
Healy detailed the accident, describing it as resembling a "crime scene," as she intervened between her two Staffordshire bull terriers. She shared a photo of her bandaged hand during the WBBL game on Sunday, where she was watching the match from home.
"The positive sign out of it is there was no bone or tendon damage, or a rupture," Alyssa Healy told the press on Monday.
"I think there was an artery involved which probably made it look more like a crime scene than it needed to be. It was quite gory. When I pulled my finger out initially, I thought I was in strife. But it's all gone smoothly at the moment," she added.
While Healy acknowledged that she would meet with surgeons later in the week, she expressed optimism about making a return towards the latter part of the WBBL season. However, Cricket Australia had initially stated that Healy's participation in the remainder of the T20 tournament was in doubt.
Healy's focus will likely be on making a swift return to action before the upcoming multi-format tour of India involving Australia's women's cricket team. The series is slated to commence with a day-night Test match between Australia and India's women's teams on December 21. Healy's recovery progress will be closely monitored to ensure her availability for this significant cricketing event.
