Son of Ashes-winning former England captain Michael Vaughan, 19-year-old Archie scored his maiden List A century to steer Somerset to an eight-wicket win against Northamptonshire on August 26. The win helped Somerset qualify for the quarterfinals of England’s One-Day Domestic Cup 2025 where they will face Gloucestershire on August 28.
Chasing a target of 240, Archie and Tom Lammonby dominated the proceedings. They played traditional One-Day cricket, not taking too many risks when the target was not threatening. India's veteran leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal could not get the breakthrough for Northamptonshire. The openers shared a 168-run partnership, the highest opening partnership for Somerset against Northamptonshire in List A cricket. The previous record belonged to Jamie Cox and Marcus Tresothick. The put on 155 runs together at Northampton in 2021.
Stuart van der Merwe got the breakthrough but it did not affect the run chase. Lewis Goldsworthy contributed with a 19-ball 26 cameo before getting dismissed by Dominic Leech, another consolation wicket. In the 38th over, Archie hit a boundary to reach his century from 109 balls. On the fourth ball of the 43rd over, Archie hit the winning run to take Somerset over the line.
Northamptonshire suffer collapse
Earlier, Northamptonshire captain Lewis McManus won the toss and opted to bat first. James Sales was headed for a fifty when Archie's direct hit caught him short of the crease. Tim Robinson scored 69 runs from 58 balls. Later in the innings, Northamptonshire suffered a collapse and were bowled out for 238 in 43.2 overs. Kasey Aldridge was the pick of the bowlers with a four-wicket haul whereas Ben Green and Lammonby claimed two wickets apiece.
Archie Vaughan's reaction to maiden List A ton
"It's a day I'll remember for a long time," Player of the match’ Archie said in the post-match presentation. "Opening in this competition is very different from facing the new Duke balls in red-ball cricket in April. The competition came at a good time for me and I have really enjoyed it.
"It has been nice to play some strong shots and bat for a long period of time. Hopefully, I can maintain form and take it into the end of the red-ball season."
Archie Vaughan’s List A record so far
