Pakistan secured a 120-run victory over West Indies in the second match of their three-match ODI series in Multan on Friday, June 10. Babar Azam played a captain's innings of 77 runs as he made history by beating veterans of the game like Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to become the only batter in the history of the sport to score 50-plus runs in nine consecutive innings in international cricket, setting a new world record.
He broke a record that was previously held by another legendary Pakistani cricketer, Javed Miandad.
The first of his nine 50-plus scores came in the second Test match against Australia in their last series when Babar played a brilliant innings of 196 runs. He then went on to score 66 and 55 on the third and fourth Tests.
His run of form continued in the ODI series against Australia, with scores of 57, 117, and 105 runs to his name. He was also at his best in the one T20I against Australia, scoring 66 runs. This was followed by a 103 in the first match against West Indies and 77 in the second match.
Babar's ninth straight 50+ score, beat former Pakistan veteran Javed Miandad's earlier record of 50+ scores in eight straight matches, a feat that Miandad completed in 1987. Babur also has the world record after having recently scored the fastest 1000 runs in ODI cricket as a captain. To achieve this feat, Babar beat former India captain and veteran batter Virat Kohli. As the Pakistan skipper, the 27-year-old captain scored 1000 runs in 13 innings as compared to Kohli, who took 17 innings to reach the same stage.
Playing against West Indies on their home turf, Pakistan scored 275 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 50 overs while batting first. Imam-ul-Haq scored 72 alongside Babar for Pakistan. Then, left-arm spinner Mohammad Nawaz shone with the ball, picking up four wickets for just 29 runs as the West Indies were bowled out for 155 in 32.2 overs. Shamara Brooks scored the most for his team with 42 runs to his name.
