Veteran Bangladesh all-rounder Mahmudullah announced his retirement from ODIs, ending his international career through a social media post on Wednesday. Last month, Mahmudullah celebrated his 39th birthday. He had already retired from Test cricket in 2021 and T20 Internationals in 2024. With 5689 runs at an average of 36.46, including four hundreds and 32 fifties, Mahmudullah ends as the fourth-highest run scorer in Bangladesh, behind Mushfiqur Rahim, Shakib Al Hasan, and Tamim Iqbal. His brother-in-law and longtime teammate Mushfiqur also announced his retirement from ODIs a week prior to his own.
Mahmudullah announces retirement
Before February 2025, Mahmudullah asked the board to not consider him for a central contract.
"I have decided to retire from international cricket. I would like to thank all of my teammates, coaches & specially my fans who have always supported me. A big thank you to my parents, my in laws specially my father in law & most importantly my brother Emdad Ullah who has been there for me constantly since my childhood as my coach & mentor," his post read
"And finally thanks to my wife & kids who have been my support system through thick & thin. I know Raeid will miss me in red & green jersey. Not everything comes to an end in a perfect way but you say yes & move forward. PEACE........... Best wishes to my team & Bangladesh cricket," the post concluded.
Both Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim's status in the national squad was questioned after the Champions Trophy. Mahmudullah has followed Rahim's recent decision to quit from ODIs. With two in the 2015 tournament and one in 2023, the 39-year-old is the first player from Bangladesh to reach three hundreds in ODI World Cups. In 239 ODIs, 50 Test matches, and 141 T20Is, the veteran played represented Bangladesh.
