The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on July 14 came to former India coach Anshuman Gaekwad's rescue. The board has decided to release Rs 1 crore for Gaekwad has been battling blood cancer in London. BCCI's decision came a day after emotional appeals from former captain Kapil Dev and Sandeep Patil.
"Mr. Jay Shah has instructed the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to release Rs 1 crore with immediate effect to provide financial assistance to India's veteran cricketer Mr Anshuman Gaekwad, who is battling cancer," the BCCI said in a statement.
Gaekwad is currently at King's College Hospital in London undergoing treatment.
"Shah has also spoken to Mr Gaekwad's family to take stock of the situation and extend support. The board stands by Gaekwad's family in this hour of crisis and will do whatever is essential for Mr Gaekwad's quick recovery," the statement continued.
"The BCCI will continue to monitor Mr Gaekwad's progress and is confident that he will come out of this phase strongly," it added.
Anshuman Gaekwad’s international and domestic career
Maharashtra-born Anshuman is son of former India captain Datta Gaekwad. He made his Test and ODI debut in 1975. He played 40 Tests and scored 1,985 runs at an average of 30.07 including two centuries and 10 half-centuries. In the ODIs, he scored 269 runs from 14 innings at an average of 20.69 including one half-century. He has three wickets in international cricket as well.
The Baroda batter was a legend in domestic cricket. He has 12,136 runs from 206 first-class games at an average of 41.56. He has 34 centuries and 47 fifties in the first-class format.
