The Impact Player rule has again come into the limelight ahead of the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally requested views from all ten IPL franchises on the much-debated Impact Player rule.
The governing body has also provided a deadline of 31 August 2026. In a communication sent to teams, the board asked for consolidated feedback from cricket operations departments on the rule, along with other operational matters including PMOA issues, umpiring, practice sessions and playing conditions, as per a report in Cricbuzz.

The request follows discussions held during the IPL 2026 captains’ meeting, where it was agreed that post-season inputs would be collected. Introduced in 2023, the Impact Player provision allows a team to substitute one player from its starting XI during a match.
The incoming player can both bat and bowl a full quota, effectively creating a 12-player tactical option. While it has added strategic flexibility, the rule has polarised opinion. Critics argue it has contributed to higher scoring rates, reduced the value of genuine all-rounders and tilted the balance further towards batting, particularly during the high-scoring 2026 season.
This has divided the fans. Supporters maintain it enhances entertainment and squad depth. The feedback process will help the BCCI compile inputs and decide on any potential changes for IPL 2027. No final decision has been announced, and the rule remains in place for now.
