BCCI to send Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's parents on UK tour for T20I debut to 'ease a lot of issues'

Devajit Saikia has confirmed that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's parents will acompany him on UK tour.

Sooryavanshi is expected to make his T20I debut in T20Is against Ireland.

15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has faced criticism of late for pushing Sri Lanka A’s Vishen Halambage upon provocation after tense super over finish. Ahead of Sooryavanshi’s T20I debut on UK tour (Ireland and England), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wants the youngster’s parents to accompany him. The BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said that the decision is taken to help Sooryavanshi to get comfortable in an adult environment. The move is finalised keeping in mind a 'lot of issues that can crop up' as he is a young kid touring with a senior team.

"We are doing this because we believe it will ease a lot of issues as far as Vaibhav is concerned," Saikia told PTI.

Saikia cited young school students' example who are often accompanied on trips. He is concerned about the future of Sooryavanshi who can be an asset to Indian cricketer for next two to three decades. He also recalled how a young Sachin Tendulkar had calming influence of senior cricketers on his debut tour in 1989 against Pakistan.

Presence of seniors in the T20I squad

In the T20I side for UK tour, Shreyas Iyer takes over captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav. Apart from Iyer, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel are senior players who have been in the Indian cricket setup for long. Also, Sooryavanshi will also have his current India A team captain Tilak Varma to guide him. From Rajasthan Royals (RR) squad in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, only Ravi Bishnoi is current T20I squad.

Saikia is also aware of social media buzz that BCCI is contemplating action against Sooryavanshi for pushing the Sri Lanka A player. He dismissed all rumours and said that BCCI would not step into match referee's domain. He said that the BCCI does not mean to intrude and the match referee and the umpires will take final call on the matter.

While Sooryavanshi searches for his maiden List A fifty, India A have qualified for the tri-series final against Sri Lanka A after a thumping win over Afghanistan A on June 17. The young southaw will have a chance to prove himself in the One-Day format before heading off to UK for his T20I debut.
