The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice president Rajeev Shukla has rubbished reports of Rohit Sharma telling the officials during the review meeting that he will continue to captain in ODIs and Tests until a replacement is found. The report suggested that he has also asked for a role in picking his successor. Shukla said that nothing like this happened and also backed the captain to return to form after a lacklustre season of Test cricket with the bat
"This is also wrong that Rohit has insisted on captaincy. He is the captain. Form or lack of form is part and parcel of the game. These are phases, nothing new. When he saw he is out of form, he dropped himself from the fifth Test," Shukla responded to a Sports Tak query on January 13.
Rohit scored 31 runs from five innings in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 before he opted out of the fifth and final Test of the series at the Sydney Cricket Ground where Jasprit Bumrah took over as captain for the second time in the series.
Shukla also falsified reports of rifts between head coach Gautam Gambhir and Rohit.
"It's completely wrong statement, there is no rift between chairman of selection (Ajit Agarkar) and coach, there is no rift between captain and coach. This is all rubbish which is being spread in a section of media," the veteran administrator said.

When will the Champions Trophy 2025 squad be announced?
Meanwhile, India's ICC Champions Trophy 2025 squad is yet to be announced. India and Pakistan are the only two teams who have not announced their squads yet. Both teams have been marred with injuries. While co-hosts Pakistan are waiting on update on opener Saim Ayub's injury, there are question marks over Jasprit Bumrah's participation as he suffered a back spasm in Sydney Test.
"On 18 or 19 January, the selection committee and secretary will sit and decide the Champions Trophy squad," the 65-year-old said.
