The Covid-19 pandemic has been disastrous in all possible ways. From loss of human lives to taking a toll on mental health, the ravaging impact of the pandemic has been simply fatal and unsurprisingly sports fraternity has been a major victim of the pandemic. As a result of it multiple sports events, across the world have been either postponed indefinitely or cancelled.
The scene in Indian domestic circuit has not been much different as well. Recently, All India Football Federation (AIFF) had to suspend the I-League for at least six weeks after a Covid-19 outbreak jolted teams participating in Kolkata. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had to postpone the Ranji Trophy, Senior Women’s T20 League, Col C K Nayudu Trophy on January 4 (Tuesday) because of the increasing cases of Covid-19 in the country.
Ganguly's words
The BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has now said that the BCCI would like to reassure that it will do everything to restart the domestic season once the Covid situation is under control.
In a letter addressed to the affiliated units of BCCI, Ganguly said that the board is committed to hold the remaining tournaments for this season and it will shortly come back with a revised plan.
“As you are aware, we had to put on hold the currently on-going domestic season due to the worsening Covid 19 situation. The Covid cases are rapidly increasing and there were multiple positive cases in many teams. It posed an imminent threat to the health and safety of players, officials and all others related to the running of the tournaments,” Ganguly said in the letter.
“The BCCI would like to reassure that it will do everything to restart the domestic season once the Covid situation is under control. We are committed to holding the remaining tournaments for this season. The Board will shortly come back to you with a revised plan,” Ganguly added in the letter.
MCA postponed local tournaments
Previously, Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced the postponement of all local tournaments because of the rising cases of Covid-19 in Maharasthra.
“Due to increasing COVID-19 cases in Mumbai, Kanga & Tournament Committee decided to postpone all MCA Tournaments including U-25 Shalini Bhalekar and Madhav Mantri E,F & G Div matches till further notice," MCA secretary Sanjay Naik and Joint Secretary Shahalam Shaikh stated in an official note.
