Australian cricket legend Brett Lee has given his opinion on Gautam Gambhir's appointment as India's new head coach. The BCCI announced Gambhir's appointment last week, succeeding Rahul Dravid. Gautam Gambhir has taken over the coaching role from Rahul Dravid, who led the Indian team from 2021 until last month. Under Dravid's leadership, India achieved significant success across all formats. Last year, the team won the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka and reached the finals of both the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup 2023. Dravid concluded his tenure as India's head coach on a high note by guiding the team to its second T20 World Cup title last month. India defeated South Africa by 7 runs in the final, winning their first ICC trophy in 11 long years. Not just that, India made history by becoming the first team to win the T20 World Cup without losing a single game in the tournament.
Brett Lee on Gautam Gambhir's appointment
After Dravid's successful regime, Gautam Gambhir faces a big challenge in his first stint as the head coach of any team. While the future remains uncertain, Brett Lee is confident that his former IPL captain will make a positive impact. The legendary Australian pacer, who played under Gambhir's captaincy in the IPL, highlighted Gambhir's performance as the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders as the best example of his leadership abilities.
"He's (Gautam Gambhir) done a terrific job every time he's had an opportunity. The Indian Premier League title with KKR is the best example. He's always been there, always at the top of his game," Brett Lee told the Times of India.
Continuing, Brett Lee emphasised that Gambhir always manages to unite the players and noted that his aggression and winning attitude will benefit the Indian team. Lee concluded by congratulating Dravid on ending his coaching tenure on a high note.
"He finds a way to unite his players and graft his team together. He builds a solid structure. He has been a terrific player, and his aggression and winning attitude will help India. He has shone internationally as a player. India is in safe hands with Gautam Gambhir as coach. Congratulations to Rahul for finishing on a high," Brett Lee concluded.
