Vinesh Phogat was disqualified from the wrestling final due to 100 gm extra weight.

Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has pushed the date for Vinesh Phogat's silver medal case for the third time. The development came minutes before everyone was expecting that they would fially hear the much-awaited verdict on the Indian wrestler's case. Everyone wants to know if Vinesh Phogat will be awarded a silver medal after a heartbreaking disqualification from the Paris Olympics gold medal match. She was 100 grams overweight from the sanctioned limit on the morning of the final which eventually cost her a shot at gold. Earlier CAS extended its decision deadline and said they will announce its ruling on August 13, 2024. However, it will be done on August 16.

CAS gives new date for Vinesh's Silver medal case verdict

"By application of Article 18 of the CAS Arbitration Rules for the Olympic Games, the President of the CAS Ad Hoc Division extends the time-limit for the Panel to give a decision until
16 August 2024 at 18h00 (Paris time)," wrote CAS in their official statement while announcing that the verdict has been deferred for the third time.

Indian wrestling icon Vinesh Phogat who was disqualified from the 50kg women's wrestling event in the recently concluded Paris Olympics after reaching the final due to being 100 gm overweight than the sanctioned weight limit left the games village before the final verdict on her silver medal case. She is still waiting for the decision from the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) on her appeal just like countless other Indians. She created history by becoming the first Indian female wrestler to qualify for the final in the Olympics.

Three key points on which Vinesh Phogat's case is being fought:

-She did not commit any fraud.

  • Her weight gain was due to the body’s natural recovery process.
  • It is the athlete’s fundamental right to look after her body.
  • Her body weight was under the prescribed limit on day 1 of the competition, and weight gain only happened because of recovery and that’s not a fraud. That is her fundamental right to replenish her body with nutrients needed to allow her body to recover.

Why is it a good sign for Vinesh Phogat?

Vinesh appealed against the decision of being disqualified from the women's wrestling event's final at the Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS). In her appeal, Vinesh claimed to be a silver medal contender. Legal advisors took part in the meeting for the benefit of Vinesh. While on the opposite side, legal advisors from the United World Wrestling and the International Olympic Committee are defending the decision. On August 9, both sides were heard, and after that CAS has deferred its choice multiple times. That is, in the instance where it was anticipated that the decision would be made quickly in accordance with the rules. There was a defer in it and then the decision was expected to come on August 13 but it has been pushed forward once again. For Vinesh's situation, this postponement is being seen as in her support. Which hints that the verdict might come in her favour and she can bring a silver medal back to India. There's no surety on which side the verdict will land but for now, the wait continues.
