During Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness's official tour to India, Chris Gayle, the legendary opening batsman and former West Indies international, had a meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During his time playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and in international cricket matches for the West Indies, Gayle, one of the most popular foreign cricketers, wowed the Indian crowds with his explosive batting skills.
On his official Instagram account, the 45-year-old posted a video of his brief conversation with the PM. His post was captioned, “Honor to have met with the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi. Jamaica To India #OneLove”.
While performing in India, Gayle took a lot of memorable hits. He had a successful tenure with the Royal Challengers Bengaluru from 2011 to 2017, and is regarded as one of the best opening batsmen in IPL history. He enjoyed a cordial friendship with Indian batting sensation Virat Kohli while he was with RCB. The two enjoyed numerous on-field moments together as RCB rose to prominence in the competition.
In 2009, he played for the Kolkata Knight Riders as well. He also spent three years with the Punjab Kings. In the 2013 match between the RCB and the now-defunct Pune Warriors India, he struck an unbeaten 175 runs, which still stands as the record for the highest individual score by a batter in the IPL. With 4965 runs, he is also the eighth-highest run scorer in the tournament.
Gayle, who won two T20 World Cups in 2012 and 2016, is regarded as one of the all-time greats in West Indies cricket. Furthermore, he played a pivotal role in the West Indies' Champions Trophy victory in 2004. In that tournament, he amassed 139 runs, ranking seventh among the team's scorers. The seasoned player's last match with the national team was in November 2021. He hasn't, however, formally declared his retirement from the game. He is regarded as a cricket great and still serves as an ambassador for the West Indies.
